The president declared that the guilty conviction from the New York jury was proof that “no one is above the law,” breaking his protracted quiet over his predecessor’s legal issues.
On Friday, President Biden faced his recently convicted opponent, stating that the guilty decision against former President Donald J. Trump by a New York jury should be honored and calling efforts to subvert the legal system “reckless,” “dangerous,” and “irresponsible.”
Mr. Biden abruptly ended his prolonged quiet over Mr. Trump‘s legal issues by characterizing the prospective Republican candidate as a criminal whose conviction was a win for the rule of law. Furthermore, he disregarded claims that the prosecution was engaging in a political witch hunt, pointing out that the case had not been initiated by his own government.
In a hastily scheduled televised address at the White House, Mr. Biden declared, “The American principle that no one is above the law was reaffirmed” before summarizing his most recent initiatives to bring an end to the conflict in Gaza.
“Donald Trump had every chance to present his case. This wasn’t a federal lawsuit; it was a state case. A jury consisting of twelve Americans, citizens, and people just like you—millions of Americans who have served on juries—heard the case.
“This jury was selected in the same manner as all juries in the United States,” he said. The lawyer for Donald Trump participated in a procedure. Five weeks of evidence were presented to the jury. And the jury came to a unanimous decision following thorough consideration.
Though he might have enjoyed pointing out that his rival in the upcoming election was found guilty on all counts, Mr. Biden omitted to discuss the main points of the case, which involved Mr. Trump’s conviction for forging financial records to conceal payments of hush money to a porn actress who claimed to have an affair with him.
Rather than this, Mr. Biden concentrated on the calculated attempts of the former president and his supporters to undermine the prosecution and the jury’s verdict by portraying the proceedings as a type of political persecution that had unfairly targeted Mr. Trump.
Mr. Biden declared, “Anyone who claims this was rigged simply because they don’t like the verdict is reckless, dangerous, and irresponsible.” America’s legal system is essentially its cornerstone, having withstood for almost 250 years. We ought to respect the legal system, including our own, and never let anyone to undermine it. Just like that. That is the United States. That is our identity.
A significant tactical change was made by the president when he chose to openly discuss the trial’s verdict. Mr. Biden has steadfastly refused to talk about the issues ever since Mr. Trump was accused in the first of four charges filed against him by state and federal authorities during the previous year.He had hoped to stay above the fray and avoid fueling the former president’s false claims that the White House was directing the prosecutions.
As late as Thursday evening, a Biden adviser, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity while describing internal deliberations, said the president was not expected to make a formal, scripted statement on television about the verdict. The adviser added it was possible that the president might respond to questions from reporters about it.
However, another aide to Biden claims that a series of following meetings that went into Thursday night and into Friday morning ultimately determined that the president should finally make his voice heard. The remarks that Mr. Biden’s staff prepared were meant to uphold the legal system rather than go into the specifics of the case against Mr. Trump.
Senior advisor to President Barack Obama during Joe Biden’s vice presidential term, David Axelrod, stated, “It was important as president to acknowledge the moment and it’s meaning, but not to dwell on it.” “That was done by him.”
However, former Hillary Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri issued a warning, stating that Mr. Biden’s remarks would not sway the supporters of his opponent, who were already unfazed by four criminal indictments, including accusations of mishandling classified documents and unlawfully attempting to rig the 2020 election, which he lost.
“Any Democratic or Republican president who does not support Donald Trump will not be able to calm down a Trump supporter who is furious about the verdict,” she declared. “A Democratic president is not going to reach you if you’re so incensed by the judgment that you’re willing to march to the streets, even if Biden were not his political opponent. The terrible truth of being president in this day and age is that.
In fact, by falsely accusing the president of orchestrating the charges, Mr. Trump has been attempting to provoke Mr. Biden into commenting on the New York case and the others. There is no information to suggest that the president or his White House were involved in any way in the two federal cases that Mr. Biden designated the attorney general to handle. Furthermore, the New York case was brought by a municipal prosecutor who is independent of the president, just as the Georgia election subversion case.
Naturally, this did not stop Mr. Trump from making the opposite claims on Thursday night following his conviction. He remarked outside the courts, “This was done by the Biden administration in order to wound or hurt an opponent, a political opponent.” The claim was rapidly echoed by his friends. On Fox News, the presenters and guests discussed the “wicked people” and “evil forces” pursuing Mr. Trump, accusing Mr. Biden of being the villain because of the prosecution.
Mr. Biden is undoubtedly taken aback by the idea that the Justice Department is just a political tool, especially considering that the same department is set to prosecute his own son, Hunter, on federal gun charges on Monday.
Mr. Biden and his team have shown more willingness to poke at Mr. Trump’s criminal troubles in recent weeks even without taking them on frontally. The president has mocked his predecessor for falling asleep during the trial (“Sleepy Don”) and sent the actor Robert De Niro to hold a feisty news conference at the courthouse assailing Mr. Trump (“guilty and we all know it”)
And they quickly sought to capitalize on the verdict on Thursday with a string of fund-raising appeals, just as Mr. Trump did. “Despite a jury finding Donald Trump guilty today, there is still only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: at the ballot box,” Mr. Biden said in one solicitation email just hours after the jury announced its judgment, adding that “Donald Trump’s supporters are fired up and likely setting fund-raising records for his campaign.”
